On Saturday 17th August, three members of Coalville Belvoir Rotary got up bright and early to help out at Ibstock Horticultural and Craft Show at The Palace in Ibstock, revisiting our very first event as Coalville Belvoir back in August 2021. This year, we were upgraded to ‘Stewards’, complete with Stewards lanyards.
Our assignment for the morning was to point the entrants towards the right class for their produce, and make space on the tables where and when necessary as more exhibits arrived. Very soon, the once empty room was full of home grown fruit and vegetables of all shapes and sizes, flowers, plants, culinary delights, crafts and photographs.
When all entries were in place, the exhibitors left and the judging began. We were lucky enough to accompany the judges and helped to note their first, second and third placed winners. They shared with us the sort of things they looked for in a winning exhibit which was very informative; there’s so much more to judging than you’d imagine. We even got to sample the cakes, scones, jams, chutneys and pickles. Delicious! 😋 We then wrote the winners’ names on their prize cards, just finishing before the doors opened for public viewing.
Tea, coffee and cakes were available before the prize giving and there was a raffle and a fresh produce stall; full of home grown vegetables, scones and jars of jam; all for sale to raise funds for Loros. Â A purchase of very large leeks, onions, garlic, cucumber and tomatoes was made by one of us.
The prize giving began and when the trophies had been presented, the exhibitors cleared their exhibits from the tables and collected their prize money. While the monies were being handed out, the tables were cleared and the room became empty once more.
